Birth control, or contraception, is any method used to prevent pregnancy. The only sure way to prevent pregnancy is to abstain from sex. But birth control can help you avoid an unplanned pregnancy.
Many types of birth control exist. Talk to your physician to determine which option is best for you. Methods can include:
- Hormones: Birth control pills, shots, skin patches or the vaginal ring.
- Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) are inserted into your uterus. Two main types include copper IUDs (Pargard) and hormonal IUDs (Mirena).
- Barrier methods such as condoms, diaphragms and sponges generally do not prevent pregnancy as well as hormonal methods or IUDs, but they do work. They must be used each time you have sex.
